Podstrana history

In ancient times, first inhabitants were Illyrian tribes. After Illyrians came Romans.
Fertile lands of this area were a part of Salona. Salona was a kind of capital of Dalmatian Roman province.
Consequently, Salona citizens had numerous estates and villas in the region of St Martin today.
In 7th century, Slavs arrived. They occupied mountain parts and slopes of Podstrana hills.
Hills were better for agriculture. Furthermore, hills were easier to defend from pirates.

For centuries, economic and political wars were battled with Venice for Dalmatia.
In particular, there were disputes for the part between two rivers, Zrnovnica and Cetina.
This region had name Poljica. Moreover, Poljica were a part of Dalmatian Croatia.
The ruler of Dalmatian Croatia was prince Mislav. In this case, we can find his name in many documents in connection with St. Martin region in 15 century.

In 15th century, Venice took over the possession of Dalmatia.  However, Poljica recognized its authority, but also managed to get autonomy. As a result, Podstrana also became part of Poljica principality.
After the time under Venice rules, here comes the time of Turks and then Venice again.
Soon, in the beginning of 19 century, French arrived. The uprising against French army was unsuccessful.
As a result, autonomy of Poljica was over.  After the fall of Napoleon, Poljica came to Austrian jurisdiction.
However, they never managed to get the principality privileges back and to unite Poljica.  Nevertheless, they had their recognizable National identity.
