Split is the capital of Dalmatia and the biggest town in the province.
Split is also a transit center. The most important for the expansion of tourism is certainly a beautiful ferry port in the city center and the airport. The port connects the city with all the Dalmatian islands. Given the size and quite old history of the city, Split is by far the most important business, social, transit and cultural spot of Dalmatia.

Split is the capital of Dalmatia and the biggest town in the province.
It is also a transit center. The most important for the expansion of tourism is certainly a beautiful ferry port in the city center and the airport. The port connects the city with all the Dalmatian islands. Given the size and quite old history of the city, Split is by far the most important business, social, transit and cultural spot of Dalmatia.
The town itself started growing around 1700 years ago when Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to retire and build himself a “weekend house” for his old days. That “weekend house” actually was a breathtaking palace, preserved until today. It is a heart of Split. The most interesting thing about the palace if the fact that people still live inside its walls. Through centuries, people adapted the rooms and walls and continued living inside the palace.
The palace has a shape of a military camp – castrum.
Because of its fascinating beauty, many scenes of the series “A Game of Thrones” were filmed here.
Apart from breathtaking historical buildings, Split has a beautiful promenade by the sea and dozens of beaches that stretch all around the peninsula on which the town is located.
Maybe a decade ago, Split was mostly transit centre. Tourists and visitors were mostly just passing through the city on their way to other desirable destinations – Dalmatian Islands. However, today, the situation is opposite. Split has in many aspects become more desirable destination than islands across.
Hotel and apartment offer today are trying to follow an exponential increase in the number of guests.
Due to lack of accommodations, many little romantic places close to Split, but also situated on the sea promenade flourished in their touristic and apartment offer: Stobrec, Podstrana, Kastela and Trogir.
